A farm is a production business that converts land, water, seed, livestock, and labor into sellable agricultural output. In the United States the term covers wildly different economics: a 3-acre leased market garden selling through a CSA and two farmers markets, a 40-acre mixed crop and livestock operation selling beef halves and hay, a 900-acre corn and soybean row-crop farm selling into a grain elevator, or a grazing operation running 60 to 300 head. The business model is the same in structure and completely different in cash flow. Buyers are grain elevators and co-ops, livestock auction barns and order buyers, wholesale produce distributors and grocery produce buyers, restaurant chefs, farmers market and CSA customers, and increasingly online direct-to-consumer meat buyers who pay per-cut or per-share prices. Money in year one looks worse than most founders expect. Revenue arrives after a production cycle: 90 to 150 days for most vegetables, 5 to 7 months for a pasture-finished lamb crop, 14 to 26 months for beef, and once per year for row crops at harvest. Meanwhile the largest startup costs, identified by the Farm Credit Administration as labor, livestock purchases, feed, seed, and fertilizer, are due immediately and repeatedly. That mismatch, not poor farming, is what kills most new operations. A farm in the United States does not have one customer. It has four distinct buyer classes with completely different economics, and choosing among them before you buy a tractor is the single most consequential decision you will make. The first class is the commodity buyer: the local grain elevator, the co-op, the ethanol plant, the packer. They pay board price minus basis, they take unlimited volume, and they do not care who you are. What is well documented is the cost side: the Farm Credit Administration names labor, livestock purchases, feed, seed, and fertilizer as the largest startup costs for new farmers and ranchers, and BLS puts crop farmworker pay at a $16.95 per hour median and $17.96 per hour mean. Build your plan from the cost side, which is knowable, and stress-test the revenue side, which is not.

Mixed crop and livestock small farms sit in the middle at $100,000 to $500,000 revenue, 20% to 45% gross margin, and negative 15% to 10% net margin.
