Editorial standards & methodology.

Every blueprint and every founder story on this site is produced by the How to Start research team under the same rules. This page documents them.

Sources.

Cost figures, permit sequences and timelines come from primary sources: state licensing databases, SBA loan data, Bureau of Labor Statistics wage statistics, published franchise disclosure documents, and industry cost reports. Founder stories rely on the founders' own public accounts: interviews, official company histories, and reputable business press. Every story links its sources at the bottom.

Figures and estimates.

Where an industry publishes ranges rather than single values (startup costs, failure rates, break-even timelines), we publish the range and say so. Commonly cited industry figures are labeled as such. We prefer a wide honest range to a precise invented number.

Updates.

Blueprints are regenerated to order with 2026 data and carry free lifetime updates for buyers. Articles carry a publication date and are reviewed when the underlying figures change.

Independence.

The companies featured in founder stories are not customers, sponsors or affiliates. We feature them because their public stories teach the exact playbook our blueprints document. No brand pays for coverage.
